Case Study: Bio-chemistry degree course support site

The Challenge

Initially approached by QMUL to develop an online game to illustrate the possible results of a growing knee cartilage, during the requirements analysis it became clear that a game was not the best approach to addressing the real issue. QMUL teaches a multi-disciplinary course attended by both biologists and engineers, two very different specialisations. Some students have difficulty understanding the course material from the other discipline and what was needed was an innovative way to put the course content across and to make it more accessible to students.

Solution

Solvexx developed the concept and a designed a course support site using the Learnexx platform to deliver the content, which included video, course reference material and an interactive 3D virtual laboratory which allows students to perform lab work and use equipment that is not available in the real world, but is essential to understanding the course. The site helps students understand the history, the possible choices and the state-of-the-art of tissue cultivation process for growing new knee cartilage and combines the right balance of “cool” to engage students in what is a serious topic.

Results

The site significantly exceeded QMULs expectations regarding what was possible with a limited budget. The approach was tested with both students and staff and very well received by both. The real test however is that the grades for the first year of students using the site were significantly better than previous years, showing that the site meets its primary aim.

Client Feedback

Dr Tina Chowdhury Queen Mary University London
"I knew what I wanted to teach i.e. the science but I didn’t actually know how to do this on-line. I was relieved when Solvexxx took on the project. Following several hours of phone calls and explanation for scientific jargon such as cartilage, bioreactors, mechanobiology etc, they took charge and got on with what was required. Solvexx ensured regular contact by keeping me informed of project progress and also took the time to explain things ie. IT stuff when my biological background didn’t meet gell with the technical know how. The best thing about the Solvexx team was that they kept the ball rolling at a fast pace resulting in completion of project deliverables."
